Greater Hobart National Events

As the capital city of Tasmania, Greater Hobart boasts several annual events that attract people from all over the country and even internationally. From cultural festivals to sporting events, there is always something happening in and around Hobart.

One of the most well-known events is the Taste of Tasmania, which takes place at the Hobart waterfront every year from late December to early January. The Taste is a celebration of Tasmania's food and beverage industry, with more than 70 stalls of food, wine, and beer. There are also live music performances, cooking demonstrations, and a fireworks display on New Year's Eve.

Another popular event is the Dark MOFO festival, which is held in mid to late June. This event is run by the Museum of Old and New Art (MONA), and it celebrates the dark and mystical side of Tasmania's winter season. The festival features a range of art installations, music performances, and cultural events, including a massive nude swim in the Derwent River.

The Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race is a highly anticipated annual event that takes place on Boxing Day (December 26th) each year. The race attracts some of the world's top sailors and features a 628 nautical mile journey from Sydney Harbour to Hobart. The start of the race is a spectacular event, with thousands of spectators lining the Sydney Harbour foreshore.

Hobart also hosts the Australian Wooden Boat Festival every two years in February. The festival celebrates the art of boatbuilding and restoration, and features more than 500 boats on display, live music, food, and cultural events. Visitors can even take a cruise on one of the historic boats.

For music lovers, the Falls Festival is a must-see event. Held over New Year's Eve, this festival combines some of Australia's best indie and alternative music acts, with camping, food, and drink stalls. The Falls Festival has been running for more than 25 years and is one of the largest music festivals in Tasmania.

In March, Hobart hosts the Royal Hobart Regatta, which is one of the oldest regattas in the world. The event features a range of water sports and activities, including sailing, rowing, and swimming races. There are also carnival rides, food stalls, and live entertainment for all ages.

The Huon Valley Mid-Winter Festival is a unique event that takes place in July. It celebrates the age-old tradition of wassailing, which involves singing to apple trees in the hope of a good harvest. The festival features a torch-lit procession, live music, bonfires, and of course, apple cider.

These are just a few of the annual events that take place in and around Greater Hobart. Whether you're a food lover, music fan, or sports enthusiast, there's something for everyone to enjoy in Tasmania's capital city.
